Student access to laptops at UNC-Chapel Hill makes it possible for departments to offer some of their courses in innovative formats that address important student learning needs. When the Romance Languages Department found itself struggling to satisfy student demand for introductory Spanish courses, it looked to technology for help. The outcome was a complete course redesign that leverages students’ easy access to laptops and an online courseware program.

The School of Medicine is in its eleventh year of a laptop requirement for all first year medical students. They are required to purchase a specific model CCI laptop, which is distributed during orientation. As a part of orientation, students take part in a one-and-a-half hour training session where they discuss how the laptop will be used in the medical school environment, IT security and general campus policies for campus networks.

For several years, UNC Chapel Hill has required every undergraduate student to have access to a laptop. Our teachers are constantly looking for new and innovative ways that students can benefit from this access. One of the ways students and teachers have profited is secure testing environments that allow students to take their exams on their computers.
