Windows on my MacBook?
For students purchasing MacBooks through the CCI, Windows 7 Enterprise Edition along with Microsoft Office 2010 Professional can be installed on your MacBook before you pick it up at your orientation session. All you need to do is check the box next to "Install Windows 7 with Office 2010 on my MacBook Pro in addition to Mac OS and Office 2011 for Mac. Dual boot with BootCamp." when placing your order.
Do I need or want Windows installed on my MacBook?
The answer to this question is completely up to you. In the past a number of students with MacBooks have asked the IT Help Desk to install Windows on their MacBooks for any number of reasons. Mostly these requests stem from the need to use a particular software package that isn’t offered for the Macs or has some incompatibilities that are solved by using the Windows version. However, many students who use MacBooks at Carolina have never needed Windows installed and are able to do everything they need to for their studies and personal use.
How will Windows be installed on my macbook?
If you choose to have Windows installed on your CCI model MacBook before picking it up at your orientation session, then our techs will use the Apple utility Boot Camp to create a separate partition on your hard drive where Windows 7 will be installed. What this means for you is that approximately 50 Gigabytes of your hard drive will be set aside for installing Windows, Office, and other software. When you turn your MacBook on you’ll be able to choose whether you want to boot up into Mac OS or Windows. If you have additional questions about this please contact CCI or the Help Desk.
Other Options
You also have other options for using Windows and Windows based software while at Carolina. Some of these options include:
- Use a Windows computer in the ITS Computer Labs.
- Use Virtual Labs to connect to a remote session of Windows and/or Windows software.
- Purchase a software package like Parallels to run Windows on your MacBook in a separate window.
And there are other options as well. The choice is completely up to you.
